Aviation and Regional Connectivity
This page provides project information and updates as works progress.
Regional airports enable FIFO workforces to access remote worksites, support emergency and medical services, and provide essential connectivity for residents, businesses and visitors. Over the past decade, aviation activity in the Pilbara has grown significantly, driven largely by sustained mining and resources operations and associated workforce movements.
This growth has placed increasing pressure on airport infrastructure across the region, including the Newman Airport.
Why Newman Airport Needs to Be Upgraded
Newman Airport is operating close to its practical capacity across aircraft movements, passenger flows, and infrastructure sustainability. While still compliant with approved operating conditions, the terminal and airside facilities were not designed for current passenger volumes, aircraft types, or modern aviation standards.
Without timely renewal and upgrade, ageing infrastructure and capacity constraints would increasingly affect operational efficiency, reliability and safety.
Newman Airport Integrated Redevelopment
The Newman Airport Integrated Redevelopment is a planned response to these pressures.
The project will deliver a modern, functional and compliant airport facility capable of safely and efficiently supporting current demand and future growth.
The two key projects underway are:
Terminal Building Upgrade
Additional taxiways and aprons, with targeted expansion and upgrades to existing infrastructure.
Key objectives include:
Improving passenger flow and capacity during peak periods
Meeting aviation security and regulatory requirements
Improving resilience to extreme weather and operational disruptions
Ensuring infrastructure is suitable for long-term remote-area operation and maintenance

Tender Process
Newman Airport Integrated Redevelopment is currently at this stage
The Newman Airport Integrated Redevelopment is preparing to commence the tender phase for the taxiway and apron expansion and upgrade, with the terminal building upgrade scheduled to begin once detailed design is completed.
This stage involves releasing procurement documents to engage qualified contractors to deliver the works. During this phase, public updates will focus on overall project progress rather than detailed design or construction specifics.
