Why is the Shire developing a new Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy?

The Shire wants to ensure waste and recycling services are effective, affordable, and sustainable over the next decade. The new strategy will look at how we collect, recycle, and dispose of waste, identify opportunities for improvement, and set priorities that reflect the needs of our growing communities across Newman, Marble Bar, Nullagine and surrounding areas.

What will the survey results be used for?

Your feedback will directly inform the development of the Shire’s Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy 2025–2035. The insights gathered will help determine service priorities, community education needs, and practical ways to improve recycling and waste diversion.

Will the strategy lead to changes in how my waste is collected or recycled?

Possibly — that’s what the community consultation is helping to decide. The Shire is exploring different ways to manage waste more efficiently and sustainably. Any proposed changes will be carefully assessed and publicly communicated before they are introduced. Rest assured the twice-weekly rubbish collection during the wet season will continue as usual.

How can I stay updated or get involved?

Updates will be shared on the Shire’s website and Facebook page throughout the project. You can also sign up for email updates via the YourSay platform or contact the Shire’s Waste Team at (08) 9175 8000 for more information.

What happens after the survey closes?

All feedback will be analysed and summarised in a Community Consultation Outcomes Report. The findings will help shape the draft Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy, which will then be presented to Council for consideration before being made available to the public.
